  • Biographical Presentation

    B. besuchte in Hamburg das Johanneum, wurde Kaufmann und verwaltete seit 1735 den Postverkehr nach Amsterdam. Die „Königlich Großbrittannische Deutsche Gesellschaft zu Göttingen“ ernannte ihn 1749 zum Ehrenmitglied. Er unterstützte die mit materiellen Nöten ringende Truppe der →Caroline Neuber, die seine Dramen zuerst spielte, und hob später die gesellschaftliche Stellung der Schauspieler durch Einladungen in sein Haus. Seine handlungsarmen Alexandrinertragödien, die den Einfluß Corneilles und des B. schätzenden Gottsched bezeugen, spiegeln den republikanischen Geist und das bürgerliche Ethos seiner Vaterstadt. Dort übten sie auch ihre stärkste Wirkung.
