  • Biographical Presentation

    Hardorff: Gerdt H. senior, Historienmaler, geboren im Altenlande am 11. Mai 1769, gestorben zu Hamburg 1864. Den ersten Kunstunterricht erhielt er bei A. Tischbein in Hamburg und besuchte darauf Casanova's Atelier in Dresden. Bereits 1794 trat er auf der Ausstellung mit einem Gemälde in die Oeffentlichkeit, das den Brudermord Kains zum Gegenstande hatte und sehr gerühmt wurde. Zwei Jahre später malte er für die Magdalenenkirche in Hamburg, wo er sich indessen angesiedelt hatte, zwei Altarbilder, ein Abendmahl und eine Kreuzigung. Als Zeichenlehrer am Johanneum bildete er viele Kunstjünger heran, darunter seine beiden Söhne Gerdt jun. und Rudolph; letzterer wurde ein geschätzter Marinemaler. Auch mit der Radirnadel versuchte sich unser Künstler in seinen jüngeren Jahren. Im späten Alter hatte er das Unglück, zu erblinden.
