Biographical Presentation
Hantschl: Joseph H., Mathematiker, geb. 1769 zu Zwickau in Böhmen, gest. am 2. Juni 1826 zu Wien. In Prag genoß er im Kleinseitner Gymnasium den ersten mathematischen Unterricht, kam bald als Erzieher nach Wien, wo er selbst erst die Rechte studirte, bald aber (seit 1792) dem mathematischen Lehrfache sich widmete, zuerst als Gehilfe, dann als provisorischer, endlich als|ordentlicher Lehrer der Rechenkunst an der Realschule. An dem 1815 eröffneten polytechnischen Institute erhielt er die Professur der höheren Mathematik und stand derselben bis zu seinem Tode vor, von seinen Schülern und Collegen geliebt und geehrt. Eigentlich wissenschaftliche Verdienste sind von H. nicht zu nennen, es sei denn daß man als solches gelten lassen will, daß er das sog. kaufmännische Rechnen auf eine höhere Stufe der Vollkommenheit brachte.
