  • Biography

    Sohn protestantischer Eltern, erlernt G. das Goldschmiedehandwerk, konvertiert in Freising 1597 zum Katholizismus und tritt in den Jesuitenorden ein. Nach Abschluß des Studiums am Collegium Romanum bei →Clavius bleibt er zunächst dort als Mathematikprofessor. Die weiteren Stationen sind: 1617 Graz, 1623 Wien, 1629 Sagan an dem von Wallenstein errichteten Jesuitengymnasium, dann wieder Wien. – Die nach ihm benannte „Guldinsche Regel“ zur Berechnung des Inhalts von Rotationskörpern ist das alleinige Thema von G.s Hauptwerk „Centrobaryca“ in 4 Büchern (Wien 1635–41). Anhänger von Galilei, nimmt er nach dessen Verurteilung 1616 mit Grienberger zusammen für ihn und Kopernikus Stellung. In den Kalenderstreit greift er mit der „Refutatio elenchi a S. Calvisio conscripti“ und der Fortsetzung „Paralipomena“ (beide Mainz 1616) ein. G.s Einfluß am Hof Ferdinands II. macht sich Kepler, der seit 1618 mit ihm in Briefwechsel steht, wiederholt zunutze.
