  • Biographical Presentation

    G. trat 1801 als Teilhaber in das Bankhaus Gebrüder Bethmann ein. 1824 gründete er ein eigenes Unternehmen, das heute noch unter der Firma Grunelius & Co. in Frankfurt a. M. besteht. Bereits 1826 übernahm er mit einem anderen Frankfurter Bankier die erste russische Staatsanleihe. Als typischer Vertreter des Bank- und Geldplatzes Frankfurt in der ersten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts starb er 1852 als Guldenmillionär. Seine Gattin errichtete 1845 eine Stiftung zur Aufnahme von ländlichen Waisenkindern ins Frankfurter Waisenhaus; überhaupt unterstützte die Familie die Bedürftigen der Landgemeinden. Von den|Söhnen des Bankgründers hat Moritz Eduard bei der Errichtung der alten Frankfurter Börse, Peter Carl im Verein mit M. A. von Rothschild unter anderem 1854 bei der Gründung der Frankfurter Bank mitgewirkt.
