Biographical Presentation
Am 7.4.1455 wurde G., Dompropst und Propst von Sankt Salvator (Oud-Munster) zu Utrecht, einstimmig zum Bischof erwählt. Diese Wahl, gefolgt von der Regalien-Verleihung durch Friedrich III., wurde von den Ständen des Stiftes freudig begrüßt, weil sie eine gegen Burgund gerichtete Politik bevorzugten. Herzog Philipp von Burgund wünschte aber – im Rahmen seiner Penetrationspolitik in den Niederlanden – seinen natürlichen Sohn David, bisher Bischof von Terwaan, auf den Utrechter Stuhl und verhinderte deshalb die päpstliche Konfirmation G.s, obwohl dieser die Servitien schon bezahlt hatte. Calixt III. ernannte →David von Burgund zum Bischof von Utrecht, und mit Hilfe seines Vaters und gestützt von der burgundischgesinnten Partei in Utrecht setzte dieser sich durch; beim Vertrag von Ysselstein (August 1456) übergab G. dem Burgunder seine Rechte. Er wurde wieder Dompropst, spielte aber noch eine Rolle im Stift, weil er über großen Einfluß verfügte. Im Sommer 1470 wurden er und sein Bruder Reinald auf Befehl Davids gefangen gesetzt im Sohloß Duurstede, angeblich weil sie sich mit dem Herzog von Geldern gegen Bischof David verschworen hätten. G. wurde 1474 freigelassen, nachdem er die Dompropstei abgetreten hatte.
