  • Biographical Presentation

    F.s Pate war A. von Humboldt. Vom Vater selbst erzogen, begann er als Vierzehnjähriger das Studium, vor allem der Botanik, bei den deutschstämmigen Professoren K. L. Goldbach und G. F. Hoffmann und 1826 seine akademische Laufbahn als Adjunkt-Professor der Botanik und Pharmakologie an der Moskauer Medizinisch-chirurgischen Akademie. 1830 erhielt er die Professur für Botanik an der Universität Moskau, nachdem er nach dem Tode seines Schwiegervaters auch zum Direktor des Botanischen Gartens ernannt worden war. 1865 trat er von seiner Professur zurück. Durch den Vater war er schon frühzeitig mit der Société Impériale des Naturalistes de Moscou verbunden, zuerst 1825-35 als Sekretär, nach dessen Tode als Vizepräsident und schließlích als Präsident. Als Pflanzenanatom besonders an der Mikroskopie interessiert, konstruierte er ein bildumkehrendes (pankratisches) Mikroskop, das Vincent Chevalier (Paris) verfertigte.
