  • Biographical Presentation

    F., einer der Hauptvertreter der deutschen Freihandelspartei, studierte in Berlin Philosophie. 1846 gründete er mit J. Prince-Smith und anderen den ersten deutschen „Freihandelsverein“ und als Organ der deutschen Freihandelspartei 1863 die „Vierteljahresschrift für Volkswirtschaft und Kulturgeschichte“, in der er zahlreiche Abhandlungen veröffentlichte. 1850 Mitbegründer und Redakteur der kritisch-freihändlerischen „Abendpost“, war er ab 1856 in London Redakteur des „Morning Star“ sowie literarischer Sekretär von R. Cobden, dem Vorbild der deutschen Freihändler. Nach seiner Rückkehr 1861 wurde er auf Empfehlung H. Schulze-Delitzschs in das preußische Abgeordnetenhaus gewählt. Lange Zeit war F. Begleiter von →Th. Fontane, der in ihm einen genialen Außenseiter sah.
