  • Biographical Presentation

    E. studierte in Münster Mathematik, trat 1859 in die Gesellschaft Jesu ein und war seit 1863 Professor für Mathematik in Maria-Laach. 1867-71 studierte er Theologie und wurde 1870 zum Priester geweiht. 1872 ging er nach Ecuador und lehrte am Polytechnikum in Quito Mathematik, nach 1876 Mathematik und Astronomie an den Seminaren in Blijenbeck (Holland) und Exaeten (Holland). Zusammen mit →Johann Nepomuk Straßmaier SJ (1846–1920) bearbeitete er die babylonisch-assyrischen astronomischen Texte, die durch ihre gemeinsamen Bemühungen erschlossen wurden. Zusammengefaßt sind die Ergebnisse in der Schrift „Astronomisches aus Babylon“ (1889). Auf ihre Untersuchungen gründen sich die bedeutenden Forschungen F. X. Kuglers.
