  • Biographical Presentation

    A., der im Schriftstellerverzeichnis des Dominikanerordens als Germanus e Suevia ortus bezeichnet wird, während andere in ihm einen Dänen sehen, lebte längere Zeit in Nürnberg; auch Regiomontanus kannte ihn wohl schon vor 1471. 1494 lebte er am Hof Herzog Ottos II. (genannt Mathematicus) von Pfalz-Moosbach. A. gehörte zu den Humanisten, die für die Verbreitung mathematischer, insbesondere algebraischer Kenntnisse in Deutschland Sorge trugen. →Andreas Stiborius (aus Oettingen, seit 1497 in Wien) zählte A., dessen Schüler er war, zu den bedeutendsten Mathematikern des ausgehenden 15. Jahrhunderts. Aus einem Brief an ihn (von Joannes Zainuldus, Mailand 1489) ergibt sich, daß A. einen gelehrten Briefwechsel über geometrische Probleme unterhielt. Daß er algebraische Lösungen arithmetischer Aufgaben gegen Bezahlung bekannt gab, berichtet Adam Riese in seiner Coss (1524). Die genannten Aufgaben weisen auf Leonardo von Pisa, Jordanus Nemorarius oder direkt auf byzantinische oder arabische Quellen hin.
