  • Biographical Presentation

    A. war schon als Gymnasiast ein guter Florist (Herbarium im Besitze seiner Vaterstadt Coburg). Er studierte zunächst Pharmazie, widmete sich aber bald vorzugsweise dem Studium der Pflanzenkrankheiten, wobei er besonders in der Erforschung der Kartoffelkrankheiten Bahnbrechendes leistete. Nach kurzer Assistentenzeit in Würzburg (Institut für Hygiene und Bakteriologie) und Königsberg (Landwirtschafts-Institut) trat er 1899 in die neubegründete Biologische Abteilung des Kaiserlichen Gesundheitsamtes in Berlin ein, aus der die Biologische Reichsanstalt für Land- und Forstwirtschaft in Berlin-Dahlem hervorging. Als Regierungsrat (seit 1903), Geheimer Regierungsrat (seit 1913) und Direktor dieser Anstalt (1920–33) organisierte er den modernen Pflanzenschutz in einer für viele Länder vorbildlichen Weise.
