  • Biographical Presentation

    Gantesweiler: Johann Jakob G., geb. zu Basel am 2. April 1631, wo sein Vater Rathsherr war; seine Mutter war eine Enkelin des berühmten Oecolampadius. Er studirte zu Lausanne und Genf, wurde Doctor der Philosophie und war kaum 19 Jahre alt, als er zu Herborn eine Lehrerstelle übernahm. Zwei Jahre später wurde er zum Professor der praktischen Philosophie an der Universität daselbst ernannt. Im J. 1665 (nicht 1655) folgte er einem Rufe als Lehrer der Theologie nach Hanau und hielt hier die Festrede zur Einweihung des restaurirten Lyceum Illustre. 1677 zog er in gleicher Stellung nach Duisburg, wo er mit Auszeichnung wirkte bis zu seinem Tode, am 25. Mai 1691. Außer seiner „Arena Christiano-Turcica“ (Herb. 1662 [nicht 1661] 4) hat er eine bedeutende Zahl Disputationen, Positionen und Programmata geschrieben.
