    Jaup: Helwig Bernhard J., Rechtsgelehrter, geb. am 9. Aug. 1750 zu Darmstadt als Sohn des Hofpredigers Georg Daniel J. Er genoß eine sehr sorgfältige Erziehung, besuchte die Universitäten Göttingen und Gießen, übte sich während eines zweijährigen Aufenthalts in Wetzlar als Secretär des kursächs. Geh. Raths Graf von Zech in juridischer Praxis und wurde 1771 von dem Landgrafen von Hessen-Cassel zum ordentlichen Professor der Rechte, besonders für Staatsrecht, in Gießen ernannt. Die Doctorwürde erwarb er sich 1777 mit der Schrift: „Summa capita comm. de privilegio de non appellando S. R. J. statibus concessorum effectu, quoad querelas denegatae seu protractae justitiae,mandata de administranda justitia et alia remedia“ (2. Ausg. 1792). 1798 wurde er Substitut der landständischen Obereinnehmerei, bald danach zum Geheimen Rath befördert. Auf dem Reichstage zu Regensburg (1801) erhielt er die Geschäfte eines Comitialgesandten übertragen, übernahm aber 1802 wieder die Professur. Als Vicekanzler der Universität verstarb er am 27. Octbr. 1806. — Er hat sich durch einige Dissertationen, besonders auch durch Herausgabe des „Journal für Staatskunde und Politik“ (mit A. F. W. Crome), Frkf. 1790—93 bekannt gemacht.
