Biographical Presentation
K. übernahm nach der Lehrzeit – unter anderem bei K. Chr. Horvath in Potsdam und Heyer in Gießen – und einer Gehilfen-, schließlich einer Geschäftsführertätigkeit in Wien, Aarau und Freiburg (Breisgau) 1830 die Kommissionsbuchhandlung seines Vaters. Er baute sie als Kommissionär bedeutender Verlage – wie W. Braumüller in Wien, Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht in Göttingen, H. R. Sauerländer in Aarau, W. Radde in New York – zielstrebig aus (von 17 auf 183 Kommittenten). Der Verlag wurde 1846 als „Koehlersche Verlagsbuchhandlung Adolph Winter“ abgezweigt; aus ihm ging ein geistes- und geschichtswissenschaftlicher (seit 1919 zeitweilig Memoiren-) Verlag hervor, der unter dem Namen „Koehler & Amelang“ (seit 1925) noch heute in Leipzig auf kulturhistorischem Gebiete publiziert. Das Kommissionsgeschäft ergänzte K. 1847 durch ein wissenschaftliches Antiquariat (K. F. Koehlers Antiquarium), das von Adolf Ulms geleitet wurde und mit seinen Antiquariatskatalogen Weltruf errang.
