  • Biographical Presentation

    Gmelin: Johann Georg G. der Aeltere, Stifter der Tübinger Linie (s. o. S. 265). Geb. zu Münchingen bei Leonberg den 17. August 1674, gest. als Apotheker und Akademiker zu Tübingen am 22. August 1728. G. war ein für seine Zeit ganz tüchtiger Chemiker, ausgebildet unter Urban Hiärne in Stockholm, wo G. 1699 eine Stelle am königl. chemischen Laboratorium erhalten hatte. Im J. 1706 in die Heimath zurückgekehrt, verheirathete er sich mit der Tochter des Apothekers Haas und übernahm in Tübingen die bekannte Apotheke am Markt, wirkte auch als akademischer Lehrer und legte werthvolle Sammlungen an. Doch hat er nichts Litterarisches veröffentlicht; nur einen Aufsatz hinterließ er über die Bereitung des essigsauren Quecksilbers (sperma mercurii), der nach seinem Tode von seinem gleichnamigen Sohne, dem Reisenden, veröffentlicht wurde.
