  • Biographical Presentation

    B. lernte bei J. Ch. Dietsch in Leipzig und ging anschließend als Blumenmaler an die Porzellanmanufaktur in Meißen, von hier 1768 nach Kopenhagen. Seine Blumen- und Fruchtaquarelle (Kupferstichsammlung Kopenhagen) erregten die Aufmerksamkeit der Königlichen Porzellanmanufaktur, die ihn 1770 für dieses Fach berief. B. gehörte mit zu ihren besten Blumenmalern. Der dänische Staat gab 1790 den Auftrag zur Anfertigung eines der umfangreichsten Tafelgeschirre als Geschenk an die Kaiserin Katharina II. von Rußland. Auf B.s Anregung nahm man das botanische Prachtwerk der „Flora Danica“ (1761-1871), an dem B.s Sohn Johann Theodor B. von 1800-1867 als Stecher tätig war, als Vorlage. Die Bemalung der 1335 Teile des berühmten und originellen Tafelservice, das sich heute zum großen Teil auf Schloß Rosenborg bei Kopenhagen befindet, führte B. ohne fremde Hilfe aus. Er arbeitete auch für einige botanische Werke, u. a. für eine große Pilzpublikation.
