    Nach Studium an der Universität Leipzig und Tätigkeit an der landwirtschaftlichen Versuchsstation Möckern bei Leipzig begründete B. das Central-Blatt für Agrikulturchemie, das viele Jahrzehnte das einzige wissenschaftliche Organ auf diesem Gebiete und für die Weilerentwicklung der Agrikulturchemie von großer Bedeutung war.
