  • Biographical Presentation

    Nach kaufmännischer Lehre in der Schweiz war B. als Händler im väterlichen Textilgeschäft in Wuppertal tätig. Nach einem Aufenthalt in England, wo er bei dem Erfinder der Spinnmaschine, Sir R. Arkwright, in Cromford lernte, gründete er 1783 in Ratingen bei Düsseldorf die erste mechanische Spinnerei des Kontinents und nannte sie nach dem englischen Textilort Cromford. 1784 wurde er zum pfälzischen Kommerzienrat ernannt. Die Baumwollspinnerei, der 1899 eine Weberei angeschlossen wurde, besteht heute noch unter dem Namen „Johann Gottfried B. GmbH“, Cromford.
