    Mayer: Eduard M., Bildhauer, geb. am 17. August 1812 auf der Asbacher-Höhe im Hundsrück, lernte als Schüler der Akademie zu Dresden unter Rietschel, zu Berlin unter Rauch, weilte 1840—43 in Paris, wo er theils bei David d'Angers, theils selbständig arbeitete, ließ sich dann 1842 bleibend in Rom nieder. M. bildete mit Vorliebe Gestalten aus der griechischen Mythe oder kleinere Genremotive, mehr im antiken als im naturalistischen Sinne, z. B. Bacchus, Venus Anadyomene, Amor mit dem Helm des Mars, die Statuen der Wissenschaft und Industrie für Sanssouci (1868), Merkur als Argustödter (1877 für die National-Galerie zu Berlin), ein Mädchen mit Ohrgehäng, ein betendes Kind, welche vielfach zu Paris und Berlin prämiirt wurden. Der Künstler starb am 12. October 1881 nach kurzer Krankheit, ferne von seiner|Frau und seinen beiden Töchtern, zu Aibling auf der Villa seines Bruders W. Mayer (Directors der chemischen Fabrik Heufeld).
