  • Biographical Presentation

    G. erhielt seine pathologisch-anatomische Ausbildung bei Julius Arnold in Heidelberg und bei E. Ziegler in Freiburg, 1905 wurde er hier habilitiert. Im Sommer 1907 arbeitete er am Krebsinstitut in London, anschließend als Abteilungsleiter an der Prosektur der Charité in Berlin. Seit 1908 Prosektor am Städtischen Krankenhaus in Karlsruhe, lehrte er gleichzeitig Bakteriologie an der TH Karlsruhe (1911 außerordentlicher Professor). Im 1. Weltkrieg war er Truppenarzt, dann Hygieniker und Armeepathologe. Seit 1.1.1938 im Ruhestand, leitete er 1939-44 nochmals die Prosektur. – G.s wissenschaftliches Interesse galt vor allem der Erforschung der Knochentumoren mit Schilddrüsenbau und der Glykogenspeicherkrankheit, die als „von Gierkesche Krankheit“ in die Literatur eingegangen ist. Durch die Bearbeitung von C. von Kahldens „Technik der histologischen Untersuchung pathologisch-anatomischer Präparate“ (⁷1904) und sein „Taschenbuch der pathologischen Anatomie“ (1911, 161942) wurde er über sein engeres Fachgebiet hinaus bekannt.
