  • Biographical Presentation

    C. war der führende Mathematikhistoriker Deutschlands im 19. Jahrhundert. Er studierte zunächst in Heidelberg (1848), dann (1851) in Göttingen (Gauß, Stern) und (1852) in Berlin (Dirichlet, Steiner). 1853 habilitierte er sich in Heidelberg und las dort seit 1860 über Mathematikgeschichte, seit 1875 in 3semestrigem Kurs. C. wurde 1863 außerordentlicher Professor, 1877 Honorarprofessor und war 1908-13 ordentlicher Professor. Er war Mitglied zahlreicher Akademien und Gelehrter Gesellschaften. 1859 trat er in die Redaktion der Zeitschrift für Mathematik und Physik ein, leitete 1875-1900 deren historisch-literarische Abteilung und gab 1877-1918 die Abhandlungen zur Geschichte der Mathematischen Wissenschaften heraus. C. war Verfasser zahlreicher Abhandlungen, Rezensionen und umfangreicherer Schriften zur Mathematikgeschichte. Sein Hauptwerk, die „Vorlesungen über Geschichte der Mathematik“ (4 Bände, 1880-1908, mehrere Auflagen und Nachdrucke) sind eine für ihre Zeit sehr beachtliche und die bisher eingehendste Gesamtdarstellung von den Anfängen bis 1800, jedoch heute nach Inhalt und Methode überholt. Die internationale mathematikgeschichtliche Forschung hat durch C. wesentliche Impulse empfangen, hat seine Hauptergebnisse ergänzt, verschärft und berichtigt und ist in kritischer Auseinandersetzung mit seinem Vorgehen zur ideengeschichtlichen Auffassung übergegangen.
