  • Biographical Presentation

    C. studierte seit 1835 Naturwissenschaften in Berlin, ging 1839 für ein Jahr als Museumspräparator nach Charleston (Carolina), wurde 1841 wissenschaftlicher Hilfsarbeiter, 1846 Assistent, 1850 Erster Kustos am Zoologischen Museum der Universität Berlin, dessen Vogelabteilung er bis 1893 verwaltet und zu hohem Ansehen gebracht hat. 1853 gründete er das von ihm bis 1893 redigierte (und noch jetzt bestehende) „Journal für Ornithologie“, 1868 schuf er die „Deutsche Ornithologische Gesellschaft“. C. gehörte zu den bedeutendsten Förderern der Vogel-Systematik. Vor allem seine Kenntnis der süd- und mittelamerikanischen Vögel, die er in vielen kleineren Schriften bearbeitet hat, war überragend.|
