Biographical Presentation
Bebel: Balthasar B., lutherischer Theologe, welcher 1632 geb., nach den in Leipzig und Wittenberg zurückgelegten Studien in seinem Geburtsort Straßburg 1661 Prediger und Professor, und im nächsten Jahre auch Doctor der Theologie wurde. Zu Spener's Lehrern gehörte er nicht mehr, durch ihn wurde sogar die dortige Facultät gegen dessen nachheriges Auftreten und Wirksamkeit ungünstig gestimmt. Gleichwol war es Spener, welcher mit ihm später von Dresden aus über die B. angetragene Berufung an Calov's Stelle correspondirte. B. folgte 1686 diesem Rufe und ging als Professor und General-Superintendent nach Wittenberg, wo er jedoch in Folge eines Schlaganfalls schon am 2. Oct. desselben Jahres gestorben ist. Seine Schriften (vgl. Jöcher), Beiträge zur theologischen Methodenlehre, Symbolik und Polemik, kennzeichnen ihn als einen Anhänger der lutherischen Orthodoxie, Gegner der Union und des Synkretismus.
