Biographical Presentation
Battus: M. Levinus B., Professor der Medicin, geb. zu Gent, Sohn des Bartholomäus B. aus Aelst in Flandern, eines Schülers Luthers, der 1556 der Religion wegen die Heimath verlassen mußte und über Lübeck nach Rostock kam, wo er 1558 starb. Sein gleichfalls flüchtiger Sohn Johannes ward Stammvater der Batten in Hamburg. Levinus wurde in Rostock 1557 immatriculirt, studirte ferner in Wittenberg, wo er Mag. artium wurde; 1560 trat er als solcher in die Rostocker Facultät, und der Rath übertrug ihm die mathematische Vorlesung, 1564 wurde er Regens des Collegium facult. art., ging 1565 vor der Pest nach Italien, 1566 kehrte er als Dr. med. zurück, ward fürstlicher außerordentlicher Professor, † 11. April 1591. Seine erste Frau Anna war die Tochter des berühmten Konrad Pegelius, er heirathete sie 1563, der älteste Sohn, Levin, war Jurist und Professor Vicarius in Rostock, † c. 1643. B. hat als tüchtiger Mathematiker und Mediciner gegolten, er behauptete mit Sicherheit die Epilepsie (durch Kopföffnung) heilen zu können. Noch 1591 gab er in Rostock die Werke des Mediciners Bording heraus, dessen Hausgenosse und Zuhörer er gewesen.
