Biographical Presentation
E. war gelernter Büchsenmacher, ging 1831 nach Belgien zu J. Cockerill, dessen erste Lokomotive „Le Beige“ er 1835 montierte. Dann trat er nach Besuch der Gewerbeschule in Düsseldorf bei der Sächsischen Maschinenbau-Compagnie in Chemnitz ein, wo er 1839/40 den Bau der beiden einzigen von dieser Firma gebauten Lokomotiven „Teutonia“ und „Pegasus“ für die Leipzig-Dresdener Eisenbahn leitete. 1843-68 stand er als Obermaschinenmeister in Diensten der Sächsisch-Schlesischen Bahn und der Sächsischen Staatsbahnen und erfand die schwingende Welle der zweiseitigen Bremse (1847) und die transportable E.sche Waage zur Feststellung der Achsdrücke von Fahrzeugen. Er gilt als Altmeister des Eisenbahnwesens und war eng mit G. Stephenson befreundet.
