    H. verbrachte seine musikalischen Lehrjahre 1638-43 in Berlin und Spandau. Die anschließenden Wanderjahre führten ihn vor allem in Städte des Ostseeraums. In Insterburg, Spandau, Küstrin und Berlin übte er kurzfristige musikalische Tätigkeiten aus; danach wirkte er 1651-59 in Stettin und von 1659 bis zu seinem Tode als Stadtmusiker in Berlin. – H. wäre längst in Vergessenheit geraten, hätte er nicht wesentlichen Anteil an der musikalischen Gestaltung des berühmten, von Johann Crüger gegründeten protestantischen Gesangbuches „Praxis pietatis melica“. Die Berliner Ausgabe dieses Unternehmens besorgte er nach dem Tod Crügers von der 12. (1666) bis zur 28. (1698) Auflage. Bereits der 12. Auflage gab er als Anhang 65 Epistel-Lieder, meist auf Texte von Martin Opitz, bei. Seither war er auch im Hauptteil des Gesangbuches mit eigenen Weisen vertreten, von denen „Gib dich zufrieden und sei stille“ (auf die Dichtung Paul Gerhardts) am bekanntesten geworden ist.
