    A. studierte in München u. a. bei →K. von Kupffer, →O. von Bollinger und →F. von Winckel, arbeitete u. a. mikroskopisch bei Rüge in Berlin, dann sechs Jahre lang als Assistent an der Münchner-Universitäts-Frauenklinik. 1892 habilitiert, wurde er 1898 als Nachfolger seines Vaters Vorstand der 2. gynäkologischen Abteilung des Allgemeinen Krankenhauses und 1905 Professor. A. hat hervorragenden Anteil am Aufschwung der deutschen operativen Gynäkologie. Als Operateur war er überragend; er bereicherte die Wissenschaft durch eine Fülle von Fortschritten und neuen Gedanken. Besonders pflegte er die von seinen Lehrern in ihm angeregte pathologisch-anatomische und histologische Richtung; sein Lehrbuch der mikroskopisch-gynäkologischen Diagnostik (1897) ist das erste dieser Art. Selbst ein Meister seines Faches, warnte A. vor engem Spezialistentum; er blieb in Fühlung mit den Grenzgebieten zur inneren Medizin und Chirurgie und bezog als einer der ersten die Urologie in das gynäkologische Spezialfach ein.
