  • Biographical Presentation

    Nach Ablegung der Reifeprüfung am Nicolai-Gymnasium in Leipzig studierte F. in Erlangen und in Leipzig, wo er 1882 zum Dr. phil. promoviert wurde und sich 1884 habilitierte. 1887/88 war er mit H. Lenk auf Forschungsreisen in Mexiko. 1891-1933 wirkte er als außerordentlicher Professor und zugleich 1914-41 als Vorstand des Paläontologischen Museums in Leipzig. – F. Forschungen galten zuerst den fossilen Hölzern, dann den fossilen Korallen, wodurch er sich internationalen Ruf erwarb. Schließlich förderte er die territoriale Diluvialpaläontologie (zum Beispiel durch die Bergung, Präparation und Aufstellung des sogenannten Bornaer Mammutskelettes) und die Prähistorik. Alle seine Arbeiten sind vorwiegend deskriptiven Charakters, aber ausgezeichnet durch völlige Beherrschung des Materials und der Literatur.
