  • Biographical Presentation

    F. studierte in Leipzig 1821-24 Theologie und Orientalistik und setzte das Studium des Arabischen, Persischen und Türkischen 1829-30 in Paris bei S. de Sacy fort. 1832 wurde er Professor an der Fürstenschule in Meißen, mußte aber wegen eines Lungenleidens 1850 in den Ruhestand treten. Er katalogisierte 1851-54 die arabischen, persischen und türkischen Handschriften der Hofbibliothek in Wien (3 Bände, 1865-67). Seit 1855 lebte er in Dresden. F. hat sich insbesondere um die Arabistik verdient gemacht. Sein unverdrossener Fleiß hat ihr wichtige Texte zugänglich gemacht, darunter das umfangreiche bibliographische Lexikon des Hadschi Chalfa (7 Bände, 1835-58). Seine Ausgabe des Korans (Corani textus arabicus, 1834, ³1857) blieb ein Jahrhundert für die europäische Forschung maßgebend und fand, ebenso wie seine Korankonkordanz (1842), weiteste Verbreitung. Seine Ausgabe des Fihrist, einer der wichtigsten Quellen zur|älteren arabischen Literatur, erschien postum 1871 f.
