    S →Dan. Ferd. Caffe (* 1793, bis 1837 nachweisbar), Bildnismaler in Leipzig, infolge seiner gleichgearteten, ebenfalls beachtlichen Produktivität häufig mit C. verwechselt (s. ThB).

  • Biographical Presentation

    C. war zunächst Kammerdiener und Schreiber, dann in Dresden Autodidakt als Bildnismaler, wurde daselbst seit 1782 Schüler des in Paris geschulten Hofmalers Johann Heinrich Schmidt und von G. B. Casanova. Seine Vorbilder waren Raphael Mengs und Anton Graff, die er freilich nicht erreichte. Um 1792 ging er nach Leipzig, wo er bis zu seinem Tode besonders als Pastellporträtist, aber auch in anderen Zweigen eine sehr fruchtbare Tätigkeit entfaltete. Seine virtuose, wenn auch oft sachlich-trockene Art der Stoffbehandlung, vor allem seine schlichte, sichere, mitunter steife, doch nie geschmacklose Wiedergabe seiner Modelle haben ihm viele Aufträge der bürgerlichen und adeligen Gesellschaft Sachsens eingebracht. Neben den vorwiegenden Einzel- und Gruppenporträts in Pastell stammen auch Ölbilder mit Mythologien von ihm.
