Biographical Presentation
Geschlecht aus Veringendorf bei Sigmaringen (ursprünglich Grüner), wanderte in der 1. Hälfte des 16. Jahrhunderts in Basel ein und von dort im 16./17. Jahrhundert teilweise weiter nach Mülhausen, Nürnberg, Berlin und in die Pfalz. Es erlosch in Basel mit →Simon (1725–99), dem bekannten Übersetzer mehrerer französischer und englischer antideistischer Schriften und der Bibel. Zur selben Familie gehört →Johann (1705–41), Orientalist und Mitbegründer des noch bestehenden Frey-G.schen Instituts.
