  • Biographical Presentation

    A. studierte 1877-81 an der Universität Wien (→Josef Stefan, Viktor von Lang u. a.), 1881/82 in Berlin. Er promovierte mit Auszeichnung 1882 in Wien auf Grund seiner Dissertation „Zur Theorie der Wärmeleitung“, welche bereits sein besonderes Interesse für die damals noch sehr vernachläsigte theoretische Physik zeigte. Als Gymnasiallehrer 1882/83 beschäftigte sich A. mit Privatstudien in Mechanik und Elektrizitätslehre, insbesondere mit der mechanischen Auffassung der elektrischen Erscheinungen und veröffentlichte in dieser Richtung 2 Arbeiten „Über die Energie und den Zwangszustand im elektrostatischen Felde“, mit denen er sich 1885 in Wien habilitierte. Nach Stefans Tode wurde A. 1893 als erster zum Extraordinarius für mathematische Physik an der Universität Wien ernannt. In seinen theoretisch-physikalischen Arbeiten behandelte A. vorwiegend|Probleme der Elektrostatik und des Magnetismus.
