  • Biographical Presentation

    A., aus altem fränkischem Adel, war zunächst Mönch in Fontenelle (heute St. Wandrille, Diözese Rouen), seit 807 Abt in St. Germer de Flay (Diözese Beauvais), später auch in Luxeuil und seit 823 in Fontenelle. →Karl der Große betraute ihn mit politischen Missionen und unter Einhards Leitung mit künstlerischen Aufgaben am Hof. Unter Ludwig dem Frommen scheint er 816 führend an der Klosterreform beteiligt zu sein. Er förderte Studien und Bibliotheken. 827 veröffentlichte er eine Kapitulariensammlung, die sich schnell verbreitete und schon 829 amtlich gebraucht wurde.
