    Aus begüterter Familie, literarisch gebildet, zunächst Archidiakon von Toul, von extrem asketischer Geisteshaltung, verzichtete E. auf Besitz und Stellung und lebte als Büßer in einer kleinen Zelle nahe dem Dom. Er gehört zum Kreis der lothringischen religiös Erweckten (Lantbert, Humbert, Johannes und andere), die nach Aufgabe ihres Planes, nach Süditalien auszuwandern, von Bischof Adalbero von Metz die Abtei Gorze zugewiesen bekommen. E. wird ihr Abt, beschäftigt sich jedoch mehr mit der inneren Reform und überläßt die äußere Verwaltung in der Hauptsache Johannes. 948 nimmt er an der Synode von Verdun teil.
