    B. studierte in Jena (bei →Ernst Stahl) und war seit 1880 in Gotha als Lehrer tätig. Seit früher Jugend beschäftigte sich dieser Empiriker mit den Gefäßkryptogamen, von denen einige seltenere in seiner Heimat häufig zu finden sind (Isoëtes 1874, Selaginella 1877). Die lange vergeblich gesuchten und nur einmal vor ihm gefundenen Prokormi mykotropher Lebensart von Lycopodium annotinum entdeckte er wieder und promovierte darauf als erster Doktorand bei Eduard Strasburger in Jena. In mühseligster und sorgfältigster Arbeit klärte er die eigenartige Keimungsgeschichte, Generationswechsel und Organographie mehrerer Lycopodien, Ophioglossum und Botrychium Lunaria. Dadurch wurde das mehrjährige mykotrophe Prothallium, der Prokormus, aufgefunden, der für die Keimungsgeschichte von Orchideen, Monotropaceae etc. das Beispiel lieferte. Die Aufteilung der Gefäßkryptogamen in Biciliatae und Polyciliatae beruht hierauf. Die schwere Benetzbarkeit dieser Sporen erforschte er ebenfalls und erkannte sie als ein Mittel der Verschwemmung und des Eindringens in den Boden zum Keimen (Beerdigung).
