  • Biographical Presentation

    Nach dem Studium der Naturwissenschaften (vor allem Zoologie) in Bonn 1842-47 wurde B. Professor für Naturgeschichte am Lyzeum Hannover, wanderte aber 1850 aus politischen Gründen nach den Vereinigten Staaten aus (Cambridge bei Boston), wo er die Verbindung zu Jean Louis Agassiz aufnahm. B. hat als einziger vor V. Bjerknes eine Theorie über die Genese der Stürme aufgestellt, die vollständig den Grundanschauungen der heutigen Polarfronttheoretiker entspricht und in wesentlichen Punkten die Lehre H. W. Doves ergänzte. Da er als Dilettant seine eigene Terminologie schuf und es versäumte, die von ihm aufgestellten Thesen zu begründen, fand er keine Anhänger und ist zwischen Dove und M. Margules fast vergessen worden.
