  • Biographical Presentation

    B. studierte seit 1869 in Zürich, Göttingen und Leipzig (u. a. bei →K. Ch. Bruhns) Naturwissenschaften, speziell Astronomie und Mathematik, sowie Philosophie, arbeitete seit 1872 an der Meteorologischen Zentralanstalt Zürich, seit 1874 als deren Direktor. Er verbesserte das Beobachtungsnetz, gründete 1882 eine meteorologische Station auf dem Säntis (1887 Bau eines Observatoriums) und veröffentlichte eine große Anzahl meteorologischer Arbeiten, speziell über Niederschlags- und Windverhältnisse (Föhn, Malojawind). B. war seit 1891 Mitglied des permanenten internationalen meteorologischen Komitees. Dr. phil. h. c. Basel 1901.
