  • Biographical Presentation

    Döll: Friedrich Wilhelm D., Bildhauer, geb. zu Veilsdorf bei Hildburghausen um das J. 1750, † 1816 zu Gotha. Herzog Ernst II. von Sachsen-Gotha schickte ihn 1770 mit Houdon nach Paris, um dort seine Kunst gründlich zu studiren. Von dort ging er 1773 zu gleichem Zwecke nach Rom, bis er 1781 nach Gotha zurückberufen und zum Hofbildhauer und 1786 zum Professor ernannt wurde. Von seinen Werken sind zu nennen: Lessing's Denkmal in der Bibliothek zu Wolfenbüttel; eine Hygiäa; eine Minerva; Glaube, Liebe und Hoffnung in der Klosterkirche zu St. Michaelis zu Lüneburg; ein Basrelief, Gustav Adolf darstellend, von einer Victoria gekrönt, für den Fürsten von Anhalt-Dessau; 22 Hautreliefs in Stuck an der fürstlichen Reitbahn zu Dessau und die Büsten von Mengs, Winckelmann, besonders Keppler (zu Regensburg).
