    Würdtwein: Stefan Alexander W., Historiker, geboren zu Amorbach im J. 1719, † zu Worms am 12. April 1796. Er war in verschiedenen geistlichen Aemtern zu Mainz thätig, zuletzt Dechant des Collegiatstifts B. M. V. ad gradus, dann Weihbischof und Provicar zu Worms. Er hat sich große Verdienste erworben um die Geschichtsforschung durch seine Sammelwerke für die Geschichte von Mainz und anderer Gebiete, so wie durch einzelne Abhandlungen, nämlich: „Subsidia diplomatica ad selecta iuris ecclesiastici Germaniae et historiarum capita elucidanda" (Heidelb. 1772—1783. 13 vol.); „Nova subsidia" (ib. 1781—92. 14 vol.); „Chronicon diplom. monasterii Schoenau in sylva Odoniana ord. Cisteric." (1795); „Diplomataria Mogunt. pagos Rheni cet. illustrantia" (1788); „Monasticum palatinum“ (cet. 1792—96); „Thuringia et Eichsfeldia medii aevi eccl. in archidiaconatus distincta“ (1790); „Dioecesis Moguntinain archidiaconatus distincta et commentationibus diplomaticis illustrata" (1768—90, 4 vol.); „Ad concordata nationis germanicae integra documentorum fasc. 1—4" (1775—77); „Bibl. Mogunt. libri saeculo primo typographico Moguntiae impressis instructa hinc inde addita inventae typ. historiae" (1781); „Commentatio hist. de stationibus eecl. Mog.“ (1782); „Nero Claudius Drusus Germ. Moguntinae superioris Germ.
