    Hessisches Adelsgeschlecht, das seinen Namen von der Herrschaft Hatzfeld an der Eder (hier erloschen 1570) ableitet und seit Anfang 13. Jahrhundert nachweisbar ist. Erwerbung der Herrschaft Wildenburg im Westerwald Anfang 15. Jahrhundert, der Herrschaft Trachenberg in Niederschlesien 1641. – Reichsgrafenstand 1635/40, Reichsfürstenstand 1748.

    Zur Familie gehören unter anderem: →Hermann († 1539), Feldmarschall, Heinrich Ludwig (ermordet 1630), kaiserlicher Oberst und Kommandant von Rostock, →Franz (1596–1642, Bruder des Melchior, s. 2), Bischof von Würzburg (1631) und Bamberg (1633) (s. Literatur), →Edmund (1674–1757), kaiserlich-königlicher Generalfeldmarschall-Leutnant, →Anton (1682–1727), Generalvikar von Breslau, Johann Nepomuk (1743–94), vermählt mit →Anna Hortensia geborene Gräfin Zierotin (1750–1813), Gönnerin Beethovens, →August Clemens (1754–87), Domherr zu Eichstätt, Freund Mozarts, und Hugo (1755–1833), kurmainzer Gesandter in Berlin, Komponist.
