Biographical Presentation
Mentzer: Balthasar M. III., Sohn von Balthasar M. II., geb. am 21. Februar 1651 zu Rinteln, bezog im J. 1668 die Universität Gießen, um Mathematik zu studiren. Der Vater nahm auf seiner Reise nach Schweden, die er im J. 1670 im Auftrage des Landgrafen machte, seinen Sohn Balthasar mit und hielt sich mit ihm ein halbes Jahr in Stockholm auf. Nach der Rückkehr wurde Balthasar III. 1672 Magister in Gießen und besuchte dann noch Leipzig, Wittenberg und Jena. Im J. 1674 ward er Professor der Mathematik in Gießen, verbrachte aber vor seinem Amtsantritt noch ein Jahr auf einer Reise|nach Holland, Belgien und England. Am 13. August 1676 trat er seine Gießener Professur an. Mit einigen Collegen ward er im J. 1695 aus seinem Amte entlassen, weil er in den pietistischen Streitigkeiten ein Edict des Landgrafen nicht unterschreiben wollte. Er erhielt darauf im September 1695 die mathematische Professur am akademischen Gymnasium in Hamburg, trat dieses Amt am 30. April 1696 an und starb in ihm am 8. März 1727. M. hat über astronomische und physikalische Gegenstände einige für ihre Zeit beachtungswerthe Arbeiten veröffentlicht.
