  • Biographical Presentation

    Beyerlinck: Laurentius B., gelehrter Schriftsteller, geb. zu Antwerpen 12. April 1578, starb daselbst 7. Juni 1627. Nachdem er zu Löwen studirt, einige Jahre als Lehrer und Prediger gewirkt und das theologische Licentiat erworben hatte, ward er 1605 zu Antwerpen Präsident des Seminars und in der Folge Domherr, Censor, Erzpriester und apostolischer Protonotar. Er ist ein Schriftsteller von großem gelehrtem Sammelfleiß. Von seinen Werken, angeführt in der Biogr. nationale, meistens kirchlichen und geschichtlichen Inhaltes, sind namentlich zwei zu ihrer Zeit viel benutzt worden: „Biblia sacra variarum translationum“, 3 Theile, 1616, und das „Magnum theatrum vitae humanae, hoc est rerum divinarum humanarumque syntagma, catholicum, philosophicum, historicum et dogmaticum, nunc primum ad normam polyantheae cujusdam universalis per locos communes juxta alphabeti seriem etc. dispositum“ etc. 8 Bde. fol. 1631 (1656, 1666, 1678; 2 Venetian. Ausg. von 1707). Diesem Werke liegt Theod. Zwinger's berühmtes Theatrum vitae humanae, zuerst 1565 in 5 Bänden erschienen, zu Grunde. B. erweiterte den Stoff, gab ihm alphabetische Ordnung und bequemte ihn dem Katholicismus durch sorgfältige Beseitigung aller protestantischen Elemente an.
